HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY

                                Melur was constituted as a Town Panchayat as per 3.12.1888 St. George Gazette No. 86  and upgrade as Third grade municipality in the year 1978. As per G.O. No. 85, date: 1.1.1978. The population of the town was then 33743. The entire area of Melur Town Revenue villages Melur and Karuthapuliampatti was included within the jurisdiction of the municipality. At present from 22.5.1998 onwards as per G.O. No.5. Municipal Administration and Water supply Department, classified as Second grade municipality. The Municipal office is situated nearly 0.5 kms East from bus stand, on the Melur to Thiruvathavur State Highways Road.
